Keep Your Grader Working Every Shift

Three quick-reference cards from the operators and fleet managers who keep machines on the job. Daily checks, service intervals, and the small fixes that prevent the big bills.

01
Wear Component

Blade & Cutting Edge Care

The moldboard touches the road on every pass. Worn edges burn fuel, ruin grade accuracy, and break expensive bolts.

  • Inspect cutting edges every 50 hours
  • Rotate end bits before they reach the moldboard
  • Replace bolts at 30% wear, not at failure
  • Watch for chatter — it signals loose attachment
15% Fuel saved with sharp edges
02
Critical System

Hydraulic Health Checks

Hydraulics drive the blade, circle, scarifier, and ripper. One contaminated reservoir takes the whole machine down.

  • Check fluid level before every shift
  • Sample oil every 250 hours for contamination
  • Replace filters at OEM intervals — never stretch them
  • Wipe ports clean before disconnecting any hose
$4,200 Average pump rebuild cost
22mm 03
Daily Inspection

Tire & Wheel Maintenance

Six wheels carry 30,000+ lbs of working machine. Uneven pressure or worn tread destroys grade quality and rim integrity.

  • Check pressure cold — before the first pass
  • Re-torque lug nuts after first 10 hours on new tires
  • Rotate front-to-tandem every 500 hours
  • Replace at 4mm remaining tread, not 0mm
2x Tire life with rotation

I was comparing graders for a mining site expansion and this was the most detailed comparison I found online. The parts breakdown alone is worth bookmarking.

This site saved me hours of research. The brand comparison guide helped me choose the right grader for our highway project in Texas. Highly recommend it as a starting point.

Finally a resource that explains motor grader specs in plain language. I used the maintenance guide to train two new operators on our Cat 140. Very well written.

Frequently Asked

Motor Grader Questions, Answered

Real answers from operators, fleet managers, and equipment buyers. From cost to operation to choosing the right brand — start here.

01 What is a motor grader used for?

A motor grader is a heavy construction machine used to create flat, smooth surfaces. It uses a long adjustable blade called a moldboard to level dirt, gravel, and snow.

Motor graders are essential in:

  • Road construction and maintenance
  • Mining haul roads
  • Airport runway grading
  • Agricultural land leveling
  • Military operations and base construction

They can shape inclines, cut slopes, mix materials, and finish surfaces to within millimeters of grade accuracy.

02 How much does a motor grader cost?

Motor grader prices depend heavily on size, brand, and condition.

New • Compact $250K+ Utility models for municipal work
New • Heavy-Duty $700K+ CAT, Komatsu, John Deere flagships
Used • Good condition $80K – $300K Depending on hours and brand
Operating Cost $50 – $120/hr Fuel, service, operator wages
03 What's the difference between a motor grader and a bulldozer?

Different tools for different jobs:

Motor Grader

  • Long adjustable blade between axles
  • Designed for precision leveling
  • Finishes roads to grade accuracy
  • Crowns roads and shapes inclines
vs

Bulldozer

  • Wide blade mounted on the front
  • Designed for heavy pushing
  • Moves large soil and debris volumes
  • Demolition and rough earthmoving

In short: dozers move dirt, graders finish surfaces.

04 How many wheels does a motor grader have?

Standard motor graders have six wheels — two front steering wheels and four rear driving wheels arranged as tandems on each side.

This six-wheel configuration provides:

  • Excellent stability on uneven terrain
  • Strong traction in wet or loose conditions
  • The long wheelbase needed for accurate grading

Some larger mining graders use eight-wheel configurations for added load capacity and stability on extreme grades.

05 What is the moldboard on a motor grader?

The moldboard is the main cutting blade of a motor grader. It's the most important component — it does the actual grading work.

Modern moldboards can:

  • Rotate a full 360 degrees
  • Tilt forward and backward
  • Angle left or right for sloping
  • Shift side-to-side along the circle

Sizes range from 10 to 24 feet long, made from hardened steel with replaceable cutting edges. The operator controls every motion through hydraulic levers in the cab.

06 Which are the top motor grader brands?

The five dominant motor grader brands worldwide:

CaterpillarGlobal market leader — 120-160 series
KomatsuStrong reliability in GD series
John DeerePopular across North America
VolvoOperator comfort and fuel efficiency
CASEReliable mid-size municipal graders
07 How long does a motor grader last?

A well-maintained motor grader lasts 15 to 25 years, or 15,000 to 20,000 working hours.

Major service milestones:

  • ~8,000 hours — Major hydraulic system service
  • ~12,000 hours — Engine rebuild typically needed
  • ~15,000+ hours — Tandem drive rebuilds, full inspection

Lifespan depends on operating conditions. Mining graders running 24/7 wear out faster than municipal graders used seasonally.

08 Do you need a special license to operate a motor grader?

For private job sites in the United States, no special license is required, but OSHA does require documented operator training.

You will likely need:

  • CDL (Commercial Driver's License) — to move the machine on public roads in most states
  • NCCCO certification — preferred by most employers
  • Heavy equipment training — typically 3 to 6 weeks at an accredited program

OSHA Construction Standard 1926.602 covers operator competency requirements.
